Admission process stalled in 460 Bengal colleges; Tathagata Roy blames Govt over OBC quota row

Admission procedures in around 460 colleges across West Bengal, including medical and engineering institutions, have come to a halt. The disruption has left thousands of applicants, their guardians, and college administrations in uncertainty, as the academic session remains on hold.

Former Governor Tathagata Roy has criticised the state government over the deadlock, stating that the main reason behind the stalled process is the attempt to implement OBC reservation for Muslims, which the Calcutta High Court has not approved. Roy said, “Such damage did not occur even during the rule of Jyoti Basu or Suhrawardy. Nowhere else in the country has the education system suffered harm of this kind.”

He further alleged that the state’s intellectuals have remained silent despite the crisis, which has impacted admissions across multiple disciplines. Roy maintained that the continued impasse is causing heavy loss to West Bengal’s education system and prolonging the uncertainty for students awaiting enrolment.
